The Definitive Guide to Sports Jersey Sizing
Buying a jersey isn't like buying a t-shirt. Leagues like the NBA, NFL, and Premier League have moved towards "Performance Fits" that are slimmer and longer than casual wear. A "Large" Swingman jersey today fits much closer to the body than a "Large" Reebok jersey from 2004. Our guide helps you navigate these eras and cuts.
NBA: Authentic vs. Swingman
Nike currently produces NBA jerseys in two main tiers. Knowing the difference is critical for sizing:
- Authentic (Player Worn): Designed for athletes. Extremely slim (athletic) fit, lightweight, and long.
Advice: Size UP if you are not in game-shape or plan to wear a hoodie underneath. - Swingman (Fan Replica): Designed for fans. Standard fit (closer to a t-shirt) but still slimmer than old school jerseys.
Advice: True to Size for a relaxed fit.
Soccer/Football: The "Match Kit" Warning
European soccer jerseys (Adidas/Nike) come in "Stadium" (Fan) and "Match" (Player) versions.
How to Measure for Jerseys
Chest (The Key)
Measure around the fullest part of your chest, under your armpits. This is the primary metric for all jerseys.
Length (The Drop)
Jerseys are long. Measure from shoulder to hip to see where the hem will land. Too long looks like a dress!
The "Layer" Factor
Do you wear hoodies under your jersey? If yes, add 2-3 inches to your chest measurement before consulting the chart.
Historic Sizing Eras (Vintage Market)
Buying vintage? Be careful. A size 48 (XL) Champion jersey from the 90s fits very wide and boxy compared to a modern Nike 48 (L). Always ask for "Pit-to-Pit" measurements when buying vintage.
